Ryanair hand luggage rules

Ryanair hand luggage rules. Travel. Many travellers still fall into the same trap – they pack based on general hand luggage guidelines without checking what Ryanair really allows. But this airline is known for its strict baggage rules. Just a few extra centimetres can lead to a big fee or force you to check your bag in. Here’s what you need to know about Ryanair’s current luggage policy and how to avoid surprises at the airport.

What hand luggage can you take on board Ryanair?

Ryanair allows you to take only one small bag for free. It must fit under the seat in front of you and measure no more than 40 x 20 x 25 cm. This could be a small backpack, handbag, or laptop bag.

If you need more space, you must choose “Priority Boarding with 2 cabin bags”. This lets you take an additional larger bag (like a small suitcase) measuring up to 55 x 40 x 20 cm, with a maximum weight of 10 kg.
This option costs €6–€36 online or €20–€60 if added at the airport.

What if you don’t buy priority?

If you don’t choose the priority option and your bag is too big, it will have to go in the hold. You’ll then have to pay extra. If that happens at the gate, the fee can be up to €70–€75.

Ryanair checked baggage prices

You can also choose to check a bag in advance. There are two options:

  • 10 kg checked bag:
    Online price: €9.49–€44.99
    Airport price: €23.99–€44.99
  • 20 kg checked bag:
    Online price: €18.99–€59.99
    Airport price: €39.99–€59.99

If you didn’t book a bag and show up with one, it can cost up to €59.99 at the check-in desk or €70–€75 at the gate.

Extra baggage charges

If your bag is too heavy, Ryanair charges €12 per extra kilogram. But be careful – this option isn’t available at all airports. For example, travellers flying from Kraków or London Stansted can’t pay for extra weight at the gate. They must sort it at the check-in desk before security.

Avoid unexpected fees

To stay safe and avoid extra costs:

  • Check your bag size before leaving home.
  • Weigh your luggage to avoid overweight charges.
  • Book extra baggage online – it’s always cheaper than paying at the airport.

Ryanair’s luggage policy can be tricky, but planning ahead will save you money and stress.
