Sweden border restrictions. Travel. Since May 12, 2025, Sweden has brought back temporary border controls within the Schengen area. These checks will continue until November 11, 2025. This means that people coming from other Schengen countries – including Poland – must show ID when entering Sweden.
The Swedish government said the reason for this decision is security concerns, including the risk of terrorism, organized crime, and migration pressures due to the tense situation in Europe. All travellers must carry a valid ID or passport, no matter how they travel – by plane, train, car, or bus. Identity checks may happen at airports, stations, and land borders.
Sweden border restrictions: Why is this happening?
Sweden explained that there is a serious threat to public safety and internal order. In recent months, there have been violent incidents possibly connected to terrorism and cross-border crime. Sweden is not alone. Other countries like Germany, France, Austria, Italy, Denmark, and the Netherlands have also reintroduced border checks in response to similar threats.

What does it mean for Polish travellers?
If you plan to travel to Sweden before November 11, 2025, make sure to:
- Carry your ID card or passport
- Be prepared for border checks
- Allow extra time for travel
These measures are allowed under Schengen rules, which let countries bring back temporary border checks during emergencies. While this may feel like a step back, the Schengen zone is still active. You can still travel without a visa between member countries – just remember to bring ID.
