Ryanair banned items list. Travel. The holiday season is in full swing, and cheap flights to sunny destinations are more tempting than ever. But before you head to the airport, be careful — packing the wrong things could get you stopped at security or even banned from boarding.
Ryanair has updated its list of banned items for both hand and checked luggage. Some things are obvious, like weapons or fireworks — but others might surprise you.
Ryanair banned items list
Ryanair does not allow these items at all, whether in hand luggage or checked bags:
- Toy guns, air guns, crossbows, stun guns
- Pepper spray, tear gas, and similar chemical sprays
- Fireworks, smoke bombs, firecrackers
- Flammable liquids: petrol, strong alcohol (over 70%), solvents
- Toxic or corrosive substances: mercury, car batteries, large lithium batteries
- Over 1 liter of cooking oil
- Fire extinguishers, strike-anywhere matches, certain lighters
- Dead animals or hunting trophies
What you can’t bring in hand luggage
Some items are allowed only in checked baggage — never in your carry-on. If you try to bring them onboard, they could be taken away, and you might not be allowed to fly:
- Knives, razor blades, scissors (blades over 6cm)
- Sports gear with sharp points: crampons, spears, harpoons
- Bats and sticks: baseball, hockey, lacrosse, police batons
- Tools: hammers, screwdrivers, saws, drills (even battery-powered)
- Fishing rods, darts, tennis rackets, ski poles, trekking sticks
These must be well-packed and stored in your checked luggage.

Smart bags & scooters — Special rules
Smart bags (with built-in lithium batteries) are only allowed if the battery is removed and carried separately. Otherwise, the airline can reject the bag.
Electric scooters, skateboards, and similar devices are not allowed at all.
Refuse a bag check? You won’t board
Ryanair reminds passengers that they must agree to baggage checks, scans, and possibly personal screening. If you refuse, you won’t be allowed to board the plane.
Check before you travel
Ryanair’s rules may seem strict, but they’re there to keep everyone safe. Always double-check what’s allowed before your trip. Breaking the rules can lead to stress, lost items, or even a missed flight — and no one wants that.
