Cigarette limits Poland EU 2025. Travel. Are you planning to travel from Poland to another EU country and want to take cigarettes with you? In 2025, there are clear limits on how many tobacco products you can carry between EU countries. If you take more than allowed, your cigarettes could be taken away, and you might have to pay a fine.

Cigarette limits in the EU in 2025

Many people who live abroad or go on holiday buy cheaper cigarettes in Poland. Usually, taxes on alcohol and tobacco must be paid in the country where they are used. But if you’re just traveling inside the EU, and the cigarettes are for your personal use—not to sell—you don’t have to pay extra taxes in the country you’re visiting.

The EU says that if you carry more than the allowed amount, you may have to show that they are for personal use and provide a receipt. Also, people under 17 are not allowed to carry tobacco products. It’s good to remember that EU citizens traveling within the EU can’t buy duty-free tobacco.

Allowed Limits When Traveling:

  • 800 cigarettes
  • 400 cigarillos (small cigars)
  • 200 cigars
  • 1 kg of tobacco

What happens if you carry too much?

If customs officers think you have too many cigarettes or that they are for sale, you may have to show proof that they are for personal use. If not, the officers can take them away, make you pay taxes, or even fine you. In serious cases, cigarette smuggling can lead to bigger fines or even jail.

Traveling through Switzerland or other Non-EU countries

If you pass through a country like Switzerland on your way to another EU country, and you have more than the allowed limit, you must declare it when entering Switzerland and again when returning to the EU. You might need to pay a deposit, which can be returned when you leave with the goods.

Important reminder

The rules may change depending on which country you’re going to or how you’re traveling (by car, train, or plane). Always check the latest rules on the customs website of your destination to avoid problems at the border.
