Each spring, Rome’s iconic Spanish Steps become a breathtaking sea of colour as hundreds of blooming azaleas cover the staircase. This floral display, known as the Festa di Primavera, transforms one of the city’s most photographed landmarks into a vibrant, living garden. If you’re planning a spring getaway, this is the perfect moment to see the Spanish Steps flowers in all their glory — but the blooming period is short, so here’s what you need to know.

A century-old story behind the Spanish Steps flower display

The tradition of decorating the Spanish Steps with flowers dates back to the early 20th century. Every year, around 600 pink and white azaleas are carefully arranged along the 135 steps that connect Piazza di Spagna with the Trinità dei Monti church. These azaleas are cultivated in the city’s San Sisto nurseries and have become a symbol of Rome’s spring season.

Known locally as the Mostra delle Azalee, the display usually starts in mid to late April, coinciding with the celebrations of Rome’s birthday on April 21st (Natale di Roma). The flowers remain on the steps for about a month, depending on the weather. Once the blooming period ends, the plants are returned to the nurseries, ready to bloom again the following year.

When and how to see the Spanish Steps flowers

The timing of the Spanish Steps flowers display is not fixed each year, as it depends on weather conditions and the blooming cycle of the azaleas. According to the Rome tourism board, the flowers usually remain on display for about one month during spring (turismoroma.it). As of late March 2025, no official announcement has been made regarding the exact dates for this year’s event. However, based on previous editions, visitors can expect the azaleas to appear between April 15 and May 12.

If you want to admire the azaleas at their best, plan your visit during this window. The Spanish Steps are accessible day and night, but the most pleasant time to experience the display is either early in the morning or late in the evening, when the crowds are thinner and the lighting perfect for photographs.

What visitors should know before going

The azalea display is one of the most photographed spring sights in Europe — but visitors should be aware of local rules when visiting the Spanish Steps. Since 2019, it has been strictly prohibited to sit or eat on the steps. Breaking this rule can result in fines of up to €250, and in some cases, even higher penalties. Rome’s city authorities enforce this to protect both the monument and the flowers during the display period.

Security staff are on hand to ensure compliance, and visitors are encouraged to take photos and admire the view while standing or walking. The azalea display provides one of the most beautiful springtime backdrops in all of Europe, with views extending to Via dei Condotti and beyond.

Similar regulations apply in other tourist destinations across Europe. You can read more about these rules in our article on heavy fines for tourists in Greece and Italy — in some places, a simple mistake could cost you up to €900.

Why this spring event is worth a trip

The azaleas on the Spanish Steps are more than just flowers — they are a celebration of spring, of Roman tradition, and of the city’s enduring charm. For many visitors, it’s one of the most photogenic spots in Rome during April and May.

If you’re planning a European trip this spring, or even a stopover in Italy, timing your visit to catch the Spanish Steps flowers in full bloom is a unique and unforgettable experience.
